Copywriting, editorial and consulting

Writing Consultant
In brief

Good writing makes business sense. It’s shorter. It’s quicker. It’s unambiguous. And it can be learned, provided we first unlearn the bad habits acquired from old-fashioned bosses or ill-trained bloggers.

Sydney-based writing coach Stephanie Oley offers several tried and tested frameworks designed to lift your writing techniques. Workshops range from in-house to public and motivational.

Drawing on her background in magazine journalism, radio and copywriting, Stephanie’s original courses include marketing, business, media and presentation writing, complete with original workbook.

Any course can be customised. All come with rigorous upfront client consultation and post-workshop feedback.

Did we mention?

When not consulting, Stephanie is creative partner at The Offices, where you’ll find her latest copywriting across a range of media. Offline, Stephanie stays busy exploring her passion for design, culture and community, and rambling about Sydney with her young family. She has several fiction manuscripts in progress.

A French travel magazine devoted to cycling and design? And with this theme expressed on the cover? Mais oui! Both the cover and content of last year’s Rendez-vous en France magazine, produced annually for Atout France, are designer, Frenchy and cycle-tastic all at once.

Research and Japanese translation, ‘Hiroshima Nagasaki’

Award-winning journalist and author Paul Ham asked me back in 2009 to help research and translate for his epic book, Hiroshima Nagasaki, which details the dropping of an atomic bomb on Hiroshima and Nagasaki in 1945. Paul’s book is one of the only historical tomes to date that recounts the story from both sides – Japanese […]

In-house style guide, NSW Natural Resources Commission

The NSW Government’s Natural Resources Commission (NRC) asked me to complete a partially developed style guide, describing the proper formatting for NRC reports and internal documents. The result is the 55-page ‘Style guide: Correct formatting and language use at the NRC.’ To the NRC’s original chapter on formatting, I added a chapter on style rules, […]

Writing manual, Natural Resources Commission

I developed and wrote this 54-page writing manual in close consultation with staff and directors at the NSW Government’s Natural Resources Commission (NRC). The NRC wanted a publication that would take staff through the logical steps to producing a persuasive and scientifically sound report, but without being overly prescriptive in its guidance. After exploring several […]

60 seconds with Paola Navone

60 seconds with Paola Navone By Stephanie Gartelmann   What first drew you to architecture and design? Initially, nothing. I just wanted to travel the world, and to oppose the conservative career path my parents envisaged for me – teaching and engineering! But I eventually decided on architecture, and I became interested in utopian architecture […]
